Clinton maintaining big lead against Trump in key US states
US Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is leading her Republican rival, Donald Trump, in the key states of Colorado and Virginia, still maintaining a slimmer edge in Iowa, a new poll shows in the run-up to the November presidential election.
According to the Quinnipiac University poll, the former secretary of state beats the New York billionaire 49 to 39 percent in Colorado.
Also in Virginia, Clinton holds a big lead, 50 to 38 percent, while in Iowa she is two percent ahead of the real estate mogul, 47 to 44.
The former first lady’s leads were slimmer when third-party candidates, Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein were added to the equation.
“The scary thing for Republicans in the Virginia and Colorado numbers is that they show a possible Hillary Clinton landslide in states that only eight years ago leaned GOP and before that had been GOP strongholds,” Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement.
“Colorado and Virginia are important swing states. Faced with these deficits in those states, Trump's situation is similar to the poker player who must draw to an inside straight flush," he added.
Conducted between August 9 and 16, the poll had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points in Colorado and Iowa, where 830 and 846 likely voters took part in the survey respectively, while in Virginia, the poll was conducted among 808 likely voters with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
