A US-based company has turned an old steel mill into what it claims to be the world’s largest vertical farming program.
New Jersey-based Aerofarms company is attempting to grow leafy greens indoors using vertical farming which it says needs 95 percent less water and guarantees zero pesticides and herbicides.
The trick is in scattering seeds on a special mat as favorable growing conditions are simulated. The plants in the constructed stacks, usually start sprouting within the next 12 to 48 hours.
While the company considers itself to be highly fruitful, critics say the artificial lighting in vertical farming is a significant waste of energy.
Despite the environmental criticism, the world’s growing population may actually make indoor farming a necessity.
