Deadly floods hit Philippines, Myanmar
Days of nonstop raining have caused floods in the Philippines, leaving at least five people dead and tens of thousands of others displaced.
Rescuers said Sunday that three people were crushed to death by debris after floods in Manila, a man drowned trying to cross a river on the central island of Panay, and the body of a fifth person was retrieved from a Manila canal.
Meanwhile, a fisherman has gone missing at sea off the central island of Marinduque, raising fears of more casualties.
The western Philippines has been swamped by heavy rain over the past week, forcing the cancelation of some domestic commercial flights and the closing of schools.
Civil defense officials warned the residents of Manila and nearby provinces to expect more heavy seasonal rain over the coming days.
“We are expecting more low-lying areas to experience flooding,” said National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokeswoman Romina Marasigan.
“Those who are already in evacuation centers should stay there until the weather improves,” she added.
Also in Myanmar, rain has been pouring incessantly for a fortnight, causing floods.
The Department of Relief and Resettlement earlier reported that 419,330 people have been affected by floods in five regions in the country and the two states of Mon and Kachin, with five deaths reported from the period of July to August 9.
Other sources said half a million people had been displaced, saying at least eight people had died in nine regions and along the three main rivers of the country.
Last year, during the monsoon season, almost 100 people died and around one million were affected by flooding in Myanmar, according to government sources.
