Flower carpet with Japanese theme laid in Brussels

A huge floral carpet is laid out on the Grand Place in Brussels.

Brussels has been decorated by a Japanese-themed giant flower carpet to pay tribute to Belgium’s history of international relations.

The 76 meter long carpet is laid at Brussels’ Grand Place Square to mark the 20th Flower Carpet display.

It is made of some 600,000 begonias and dahlias that form a Japanese crane and a red sun in the middle surrounded by swimming Koi and blooming plants.

The bird and the pattern symbolize peace, fortune and longevity in the Asian culture.

Around 100 workers and volunteers have contributed to the creation of the flower carpet.

The 15th century square is a UNESCO World Heritage site and hosts the colorful event biennially.
