Russia set to stage naval drills near Syria in Mediterranean Sea
Russian forces are set to hold naval drills near Syria in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea next week, local media reports say.
Russian news agencies, citing the Defense Ministry, reported on Thursday that naval exercises would start at the strategic sea on August 15.
The ministry noted that Russian warships Serpukhov and Zelyony Dol would take part in the exercises. The advanced ships are equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles.
According to the Russian news agencies, the naval forces also plan to test-fire rockets during the drills.
Russia has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh Takfiri militants and other terrorist groups in Syria at the Syrian government's request since September 30, 2015.
On Thursday, Russian Defense Ministry released a video, showing a bomber pounding Daesh positions near the northern Syrian city of Raqqah, the Daesh group’s main stronghold.
The footage showed the Tu-22M3 bomber striking target areas in the north, northwest and southeast of the Syrian city.
The airstrike destroyed high-explosive munitions, a Daesh training camp, nearby arms and oil depots, and a chemical weapons factory across the militancy-riddled region.
The raid also killed several Daesh militants.
The operation of the Russian bombers was covered by Su-30SM and Su-35S jets. The mission was carried out after a suspected chemical weapons attack by Daesh militants in the Syrian city of Aleppo left at least five dead and eight others injured on August 2.
The developments come as Syrian army soldiers and allied popular forces have been gaining more grounds in Aleppo as they are trying to flush Daesh terrorists and other foreign-sponsored militants out of the strategic city.
Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011.
