Iran’s national volleyball team has suffered its second loss at the preliminary round of the volleyball tournament in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The Iranian volleyball squad lost to the 2016 FIVB World League fifth finishers Poland 2-3, with the set scores of 17-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 16-18, at the indoor Ginásio Gilberto Cardoso arena in the northern Maracanã neighborhood of Rio.

Bartosz Kurek led Poland with the tournament high of 23 points, while Seyed Mohammad Mousavi was the high-scorer for Iran with 18 points.

“All matches against Poland are hard and close. Today’s game was not different as well. Polish players did better at the beginning but then Iran improved. It was a balanced match. Congratulations to Poland for playing better at the end of the game. I think we featured better performance than the match against Argentina. It is a good sign,” Iran’s coach Raul Lozano said after the match.

Iran’s captain Mir Saeid Marouf commented, “We came back in the third set, and I think we had the chance to win the second set. We lost the match because of our mistakes.”

“It was a great volleyball match and an important step for us towards the quarterfinals. We could have finished earlier, but Iran played great defense. After the fourth set, it was an open game for either team. I am glad we won. Today, people watched two very good teams,” Poland’s coach Stephane Antiga said.

The volleyball tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil started on August 6 and will finish on August 21.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is in Pool B with Argentina, Cuba, Egypt, Poland and Russia.

Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Mexico and the United States have been drawn in Pool A.
