Republican donors turning to Clinton from Trump

This combination of AFP file photos shows Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton (L) on June 15, 2016 and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on June 13, 2016.

Republican donors who made financial contributions in this year’s primary US presidential elections are more likely to give money to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, than to their own party’s candidate, Donald Trump.

Political party donors whose candidates have dropped out of the race typically donate to another candidate in the same party. But this presidential election is different.

According to Federal Election Commission filings, of the donors who gave at least $200 to former GOP presidential candidates John Kasich, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush or Lindsey Graham, more of them have now contributed to Clinton than to Trump.

For example, 103 of Christie’s donors have given to Clinton and 49 have given to Trump, the filings show.

Clinton has received $2.2 million from donors to Republican candidates who dropped out of the GOP presidential primary, about $600,000 more than Trump has received from such donors.

In previous election years, donors to Republican candidates who dropped out of the presidential race contributed to the party’s nominee in relatively high percentages.

But donors to Trump’s primary Republican opponents are backing him at a historically low rate. He has received money from a smaller proportion of his party’s donors than any candidate since 1980, according to the filings.

Clinton now holds a double-digit lead over Trump in the race for the White House, according to a new poll. She leads him by 10 points, 51 percent to 41 percent, in the NBC News/Survey Monkey poll released Tuesday.

However, there is widespread voter discontent with both candidates. Clinton and Trump are ranked among the most unpopular presidential candidates in America’s history, recent polls show.
