An armed man has barricaded himself at a restaurant in western Germany after a series of terrorist crimes rocked the European country.

Police in the western city of Saarbruecken said Sunday that the man, who had a weapon, entered the restaurant earlier in the morning and sent all the cleaning staff outside.

The Bild newspaper said the unidentified man ran into the Dubrovnik restaurant in the town center and shouted that everyone should leave.

Police spokesman, Kurt Schwindling, said the man was a relative of the restaurant owner, adding that he was probably suffering from psychological problems. Others said he was originally from Macedonia but has lived in Germany for many years.

It was not clear what kind of weapon the man had and there was no indication why he was injured.

Other sources said police managed to initiate a conversation with the man and efforts were going on to convince him to end the standoff.

Officials denied the case could be a terrorism case, saying the man had not held any hostages. Witnesses said the man was drenched in blood when he initiated the standoff.

Germany has been reeling from a series of hate and terrorist attacks in recent past. The deadliest of all came on July 22, when a teenager opened fire at people shopping at a mall in the city of Munich, killing nine and injuring more than 35 others. That was followed by a machete attack in the southwestern city of Reutlingen on July 24, which led to the killing of a woman and the injury of two other people.

On July 24, a 27-year-old Syrian refugee killed himself and injured 15 people outside a café in the city of Ansbach in Bavaria.

Another teenager, registered as an Afghan asylum seeker who wielded an ax and a knife, wounded four passengers on a regional train on July 18, before injuring a passerby. The asylum seeker, who the officials said could be a Pakistani national, was killed by the police.

The Takfiri Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Ansbach and the crime committed by the Afghan refugee.
