An American author, journalist and television host has called on Republican leaders to rescind their support of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“You’ve got to pull your endorsements,” MSNBC "Morning Joe" co-host Mika Brzezinski said on Friday.

"Please don’t make me or anyone at this table on television ... don’t make us the ones to tell you. You need to pull your endorsement. You need to do something strong. You need to lead. We’re begging you to lead,” she added.

Brzezinski is the daughter of Zbigniew Brzezinski, the national security adviser for former President Jimmy Carter. She said Trump’s presidential campaign is damaging him beyond politics.

“This is hurting his business,” she said. "Talk about ‘The Biggest Loser.' Isn’t that a show on NBC? He could end up being the biggest loser.”

“He could lose this election huge, and his brand could be damaged forever. At this point, that’s where he’s going. We haven’t been wrong about him so far. So I wouldn’t mock that, Donald Trump,” Brzezinski said.

A new poll shows that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has taken a 15-percentage point lead over Trump in the run-up to the 2016 US presidential race.

According to the McClatchy-Marist survey released on Thursday, she has 48 percent of the votes as compared to the New York billionaire businessman having only a 33-percent support.

Brzezinski said she will “vote for Hillary Clinton, but I have a lot of questions and I don’t think she’s the perfect candidate, and I’ve been really, really skeptical.”

“I know a lot of Republicans who feel the same way because Donald Trump seems like he might not even be all right, if you know what I mean,” she added.

According to one report, a sense of panic is rising among Republican elected officials over Trump’s missteps and the inability of his campaign staff to control him.

Trump has insisted that his presidential campaign is united despite reports of deep divisions in the Republican Party.

GOP party leaders have even begun to discuss what to do if their unpredictable nominee suddenly quits the race for the White House.
