Russia has unveiled the first statue of renowned Iranian poet and philosopher Omar Khayyam in Astrakhan.

The 4-meter-tall bronze statue is located in the Alley of Monuments in front of Astrakhan State University.

The 1.5 tonne statue was made in Yekaterinburg and delivered to Astrakhan’s student garden to be placed next to the statue of Khayyam’s Turkmen counterpart, Makhtoom gholi Faraghi.

The sculptor has depicted it based on Omar Khayyam’s marble bust mounted above his grave in Iran. There are monuments of Omar Khayyam in Tehran, Dushanbe, Bucharest, and Ashkhabad.

Khayyam was born in 11th century in northeastern Iran. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential scientists of the Middle Ages. He was also a philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician.

Omar Khayyam owes his lasting fame mainly to his Rubaiyat, or 4-line verses of wisdom. He is also known as the author of the most accurate of all calendars in the world.
