New instrument harnesses power of music

Sudha Kheterpal with a Spark

A British-Indian musician is generating energy and hope in impoverished African communities.

Sudha Kheterpal has invented what is claimed to be the world’s first energy generating musical instrument.

She wants to use her percussive instrument called Spark in electricity-starved villages and towns of Africa, particularly the sub Saharan regions.

The mini generator uses a magnet and coil which create a current while being shaken and charge batteries. The tool can turn 12 minutes of shaking with music to one hour of battery charged light that can be used for a reading lamp or a torch.

On top of all that, the device can be also used as a mobile phone charger.
