Several injured in new clashes in Srinagar

Streets in Srinagar, the main city of the Indian-controlled Kashmir, went through another day of clashes on Wednesday, when several people were injured in the wake of the overnight killing of two civilians by Indian forces.

Local police sources said thousands of angry demonstrators took to the streets despite a month-long crackdown on protests in the region.

Kashmir, a Himalayan region known for its beautiful landscapes, lies at the heart of more than 69 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both neighbors claim the region in full but have partial control over it. India controls two thirds of Kashmir while the remaining one third is under the Pakistani rule.

Six civilians were injured when clashes broke out in Srinagar between rock-throwing protesters and Indian forces.

The protesters burned India’s flag and chanted anti-India slogans.

Witnesses said one of the victims was killed during the late hours of Tuesday when an Indian police guard escorting a government administrator fired at anti-India protesters who stopped their vehicle. The other victim, who was among the protesters, was a private guard at a bank in Srinagar. An initial probe showed he had at least 360 shotgun pellets in his body. His family blamed Indian paramilitary troops for his death.

On July 8, Indian troops killed a pro-independence leader in Kashmir. Several deadly protests have been held in the region ever since. Over 50 people have been killed and nearly 4,000 injured in the protests.
