International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has played down concerns about water pollution in Rio, insisting that the city’s waterways will be safe for athletes and visitors.

Bach’s comments come in the wake of a 16-month-long study commissioned by The Associated Press that said the waterways of Rio are as filthy as ever.

The study said Rio’s waterways were contaminated with raw human sewage containing dangerous viruses and bacteria which put some 1,400 athletes as well as tourists at risk of getting sick.
