Newly fashioned T-Shirt can detect pollution

This new T-shirt changes color when facing different levels of pollution.

Have you ever wished there were a device to detect pollution? Well you may not actually need one, because a newly fashioned T-Shirt can take care of that. Let's take a look.

The shirt has been invented by American artist and designer Nikolas Bentel. He got the idea after a walk in New York City which many consider to be highly polluted.

Color-changing dyes used in the shirt can detect and react to different air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, radioactivity or particle pollution.

The fabric wriggles when exposed to contaminants, warning the wearer of high levels of contamination. The shirt transforms back when the exposure stops.

Radioactivity, however, will cause a permanent change in the shirt. The air quality in New York City has been considered as satisfactory, but Bentel considers that not to be good enough.
