Iran condemns Wednesday’s bombing in NE Syria

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Turkish Prime Minister, Binali Yildirim, says the crackdown on suspected supporters of the mid-July failed coup is not over and there could be new arrests. He also renewed calls on the US government to extradite opposition figure Fetullah Gulen who is accused by Ankara of orchestrating the coup.
  • Iran has condemned Wednesday’s deadly bombing in the northeastern Syrian city of Qamishli. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said terrorism is a common threat to peace and security in the region and beyond. He said the international community should address the root-cause of terrorism which is the extremist Takfiri ideology.
  • Five more Saudi soldiers have been killed by Yemeni snipers in separate locations along the kingdom’s border. That brings to at least a dozen the number of Saudi forces killed in recent days. Seven Saudi troops were killed in fighting and a helicopter crash on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Catalan lawmakers have defied a Spanish court ruling and said the region should push ahead with its bid to gain independence from Spain. Over half of the Catalan lawmakers voted in favor of the text that outlines the steps Catalonia needs to take to defend its right to self-rule.
  • Russia says it is going to boost security along its south-western front where NATO is building up its military strength. Moscow says it has deployed more air defense systems and two brigades armed with Iskander missiles. Russia has already dispatched ground troops to the Crimean Peninsula.
  • The U-S state of Maryland has closed the case of the killing of Freddie Gray, the African-American man who died in police custody in 20-15. Prosecutors decided to drop the remaining charges against the police officers. Cops critically injured Gray during his arrest.
  • German police have been deployed to Zirn-dorf in the state of Bavaria as reports say an object was detonated in the city. Local media say a suitcase containing spray cans was exploded near a refugee intake center. There is no word on possible casualties.
  • Pope Francis has urged European countries to welcome those who are fleeing wars and hunger. The leader of the Catholic Church says the world is at war but not a war of religions. Francis is on his first visit to Central and Eastern Europe.
