DNC was not ‘fair’ to Sanders, says Senate Dem leader
The US Democratic National Committee was not “fair” to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, says Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.
Reid made the remarks in an interview with the Huffington Post on Wednesday.
He was talking about the committees biased approach towards Sanders’ campaign after leaked emails among DNC staff proved that chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz had favored the now Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, during primaries in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.
“I know she’s tried hard, but as some people probably know, I thought Bernie deserved somebody that was not critical to[ward] him. I knew ― everybody knew ― that this was not a fair deal,” said the Nevada Democratic lawmaker.
He added that he always had a good relationship with Schultz, yet asserting her resignation in the wake of the leak was the right thing to do.
“Debbie Wasserman Schultz, she’s always been good to me. I like her just fine,” Reid said. “So I’m sorry she had to resign, but it was the right thing to do. She just should’ve done it sooner.”.
WikiLeaks’ release of some 20,000 emails from the committee staff on Friday night left the party in tatters, making Democrats point the finger at Russia.
In one of the emails, dated May 2, DNC press secretary Mark Paustenbach wrote to communications director Luis Miranda about how to make the US media portray Sanders’ campaign as one in “a mess.”
“Bernie really had a movement out there, and it wasn’t right to treat him that way,” Reid said.
