Russian President Vladimir Putin has slammed the athletics' governing body for banning Russian track and field athletes from the Rio Olympic Games over doping accusations.

Speaking to members of Russia's Olympic team in the Kremlin, Putin went on to describe the move as a political campaign launched against Russian sportspeople.

The Russian president further added that that the absence of some Russian sportspeople from the Olympics would tarnish the credibility of international sport, as well as the Olympics itself.
