Protesters set Israeli flag on fire outside Democratic convention

Protesters have burned the Israeli flag during a rally outside the venue of the Democratic National Convention.

  • Protesters have set the Israeli flag on fire during a rally outside the venue of the Democratic National Convention underway in the US city of Philadelphia. The protesters chanted pro-Palestine slogans. Other demonstrators, rallying outside the venue of the convention, waved Palestinian flags. 
  • A Palestinian man has been killed in clashes with Israeli forces northwest of the West Bank city of al-Khalil, also known as Hebron. Israeli soldiers also demolished Muhammad Faqih’s house in the occupied town of Surif. He was accused of killing an Israeli rabbi on first of July. 
  • Two of the gunmen, who have been holed up at a police station in the Armenian capital Yerevan, have surrendered. On July 17, dozens of gunmen invaded the police post, killing one officer and taking several others hostage. They demand the release of opposition leader Jirair Sefilian.
  • China has hit out at the United States, Japan, and Australia for making a joint statement on the South China Sea. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says the move will only escalate regional tensions. The statement urges China not to construct military outposts and reclaim land in the disputed waters. 
  • French President Francoise Hollande says the threat of terrorism to Europe has never been this severe. He also pledged to defeat the terrorists by all means. Hollande made the remarks after an attack on a church in northern France claimed by ISIL that left one priest dead.
  • Heavy clashes between rival groups in South Sudan have forced over 37000 people to flee their homes and go to neighboring Uganda over the last three weeks. Eyewitnesses say facilities on the Ugandan side are overwhelmed with the sheer size of the influx.
  • U-N special envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura says the new round of Syria talks are planned to be held in August. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed hope to work with Russia on intra-Syrian peace talks. All previous rounds of intra-Syrian peace talks this year have broken down.
  • Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has clinched the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidential race. This comes after the majority of the delegates, attending the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, voted in her favor. She will face Republican nominee Donald Trump in the November presidential election.
