At least 19 killed in knife attack on disabled home outside Tokyo

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Firefighters in Japan have said at least 19 people lost their lives in a stabbing attack outside the capital Tokyo. The incident took place in a center for the handicapped people in the city of Saga-mihara. Over two dozen were also injured, some of them critically.
  • The interior minister of the German state of Bavaria says the Ansbach attacker had, in video footage, sworn allegiance to the leader of the Daesh terrorist group. Joachim Herrmann added that the footage leaves no doubt that the bombing was  a terrorist attack. Daesh also claimed responsibility for the attack.
  • A car bomb explosion has rocked the Syrian capital, Damascus, leaving behind casualties and extensive damage. The blast struck an area where some of Syria’s main security installations are based. The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the explosion happened near an Iranian school, and there were fatalities.
  • Syria has said that Israeli drones have pounded a residential building in the Golan Heights. It added the attacks were aimed at boosting the morale of terrorist groups in Syria, who have suffered heavy losses recently.
  • Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari has called on Arab states to take a stronger stance against Turkey to pull out its troops from Iraqi territory. Jaafari said that good relations between Iraq and Turkey do not mean that Baghdad is prepared to neglect its sovereignty.
  • The Turkish government has agreed on drafting a new constitution in the wake of the mid-July failed coup. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the decision came following a meeting between President Receb Tayyip Erdogan and two opposition leaders on Monday.
  • Two Saudi officers have been killed in a helicopter crash in the Yemeni province of Ma’rib. The helicopter reportedly crashed due to the bad weather conditions. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has confirmed that five of its soldiers were killed in clashes in the volatile Najran region bordering Yemen.
  • Bahrain’s supreme criminal court has announced that the first trial day of prominent Shia cleric, Sheikh Isa Qassim, will be on Wednesday. The Bahraini regime stripped Sheikh Qassim of citizenship last month, accusing him of spreading extremism in the Persian Gulf kingdom. Sheikh Qassim has dismissed the allegation.
