Germany’s interior minister warns against branding all refugees as security threat

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Germany’s interior minister has warned against indiscriminately labeling refugees as a security threat. Thomas de Maiziere said he is opposed to placing all refugees under suspicion. The country has seen a string of deadly assaults attributed to asylum seekers. Over one million refugees arrived in Germany last year. 
  • Turkey urges the EU to not meddle in its internal affairs. The bloc continues criticizing Ankara's crackdown after the recent failed coup. Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Chavush-oglu says he’s going to the US to push for the extradition of dissident cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of orchestrating the coup.
  • Bahrain’s regime has stepped up its crackdown on dissidents by arresting at least three Shia clerics. The clerics were taking part in a sit-in outside the house of top Bahraini Shia cleric, Sheikh Isa Qassim, in Diraz village before they were apprehended. 
  • The Yemeni forces backed by fighters from allied Popular Committees have targeted a military camp in the south of Saudi Arabia with a ballistic missile, killing dozens of its forces. The attack happened in the southern city of Jizan. Reports say the military camp has been totally destroyed. 
  • A new report by the United Nations shows that the civilian casualties in Afghanistan have set a record, crossing 1600 in the first six months of this year. A third of the fatalities are children. The report blames militants for the deaths.
  • US police have detained three people in connection with a shooting which left at least two people dead and 17 other wounded in the city of Fort Myers in Florida. The US has seen a surge in deadly shootings in recent years. 
  • Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has once again criticized South Korea for allowing a US missile system on its soil. Wang told his South Korean counterpart Lee Byung-se that the move harms the foundation of mutual trust between Beijing and Seoul. 
  • Over 160 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced by flooding in northern and central China. The provinces of Hebei and Henan are the worst hit. Several officials in Hebei province have been sacked as public outrage is mounting over the handling of the floods.
