Trump overtakes Clinton by 5 points: Poll

US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has overtaken his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton by 5 points in a four-way race for the White House, a new poll shows.

In a race including Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party and Jill Stein of the Green Party, Trump has 44 percent support, compared to 39 percent for Clinton, the CNN/ORC Poll found.

The survey also shows that Johnson has 9 percent support, while Stein has 3 percent.

It marks Trump's best showing against Clinton since September 2015. The real estate mogul also holds double-digit margins over Clinton as more trusted on the economy and terrorism.

Trump now leads his likely general election rival by 3 points, 48 to 45 percent, in a head-to-head matchup, according to the poll.

In the same poll taken before the Republican National Convention last week, Clinton had a 7-point lead, 49 to 42 percent.

Trump's favorability rating is also on the rise. Some 46 percent of registered voters say they have a positive view of him, up from 39 percent before the convention.

Trump has increased the share of voters who call him honest and trustworthy, from 38 percent to 43 percent. Clinton's ratings on these same measures took a hit, with 68 percent now saying the former first lady is not honest and trustworthy, her worst rating on that measure in CNN/ORC polling.

Despite the new findings, Trump and Clinton are currently among the worst-rated presidential candidates of the last 70 years, according to Gallup poll released earlier this month.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll found that demand for an alternative candidate to the two main presidential nominees has surged since the last presidential election in 2012.
