Risk of second coup remains: Turkish PM

  • Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildrim says his country still faces the threat of a second coup. He, however, gave assurances that the situation is under the control. Yildrim defended his government’s post-coup purge, saying all the measures are within the rule of law.
  • The head of American news channel Fox New has resigned over sexual harassment allegations. Former Fox News presenter Gretchen Carlson has opened a case against 76-year-old Roger Ailes. He is also accused of harassing some other women in the 1960s.
  • A research by the Markit group shows business activity in Britain has plunged to a seven-year low. Earlier, the International Monetary Fund also downgraded its forecast for global economic growth for this year and 2017. This has been blamed on the uncertainty looming over international trades in the wake of the Brexit.
  • French President Francois Hollande says his country plans to send artillery support to Iraq to help Baghdad in its fight against terrorism. Hollande made the announcement after a security meeting in the French capital Paris. He said the artillery will be sent as soon as next month.
  • Violent protests rage on in the French capital Paris over the death of a young man in police custody. Angry crowds took to the streets in the northern suburbs of Paris and set over a dozen police cars ablaze. Police arrested nine people and reportedly raided two buildings in one of the neighborhoods.
  • Indian security forces have killed two more pro-independence protesters in Kashmir amid the continued curfew in the Himalayan region. One of the slain protesters died of injuries sustained earlier and the other lost his life during clashes after Friday prayers. Tensions have been high in Kashmir since July 8.
  • Tajikistan says it has foiled four plots by Daesh to launch terror attacks in the country. Tajik Interior Minister Ramazon Rahimzoda said the terrorists had planned to launch attacks in the main cities, including the capital Dushanbe, Khujand, and Panjakent. Security forces have detained several suspects.
  • An Indian military plane has gone missing over the Bay of Bengal with nearly 30 people on board. The Indian air force, navy and coast guard have launched a massive search operation. The missing plane is a Russian-built Antonov AN-32 military transport aircraft.
