Iran’s Lut Desert named as UNESCO world heritage site

Lut Desert: Shur River.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, has named Iran’s Lut Desert as a World Heritage Site.

The Lut Desert is located in the southeastern part of Iran and is the world's 25th largest desert.

Between June and October, the area is swept by strong winds, which transport sediment and cause aeolian erosion on a huge scale.

It's considered to be one of the driest places on Earth. NASA says seven years of satellite temperature data show that Iran's Lut Desert is the hottest spot on Earth.

The surface of the sand there has been measured at temperatures as high as 70 degrees centigrade.
