Self-driving boat prepares for Atlantic crossing

It took the students about three years to complete the project.

Students at the University of British Columbia are trying to make history by sending an autonomous boat across the Atlantic Ocean in a bid to become the first robotic vessel to complete the feat.

The 5.5-meter vessel looks like any other small boats, but what separates it from others is the ability to move and make decisions on its own.

It took the students about three years to complete the project and they plan to launch the self-driving robot into the ocean in early August.

The prototype will undertake a 2,900-kilometer journey from Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada to Ireland. And to complete the mission successfully, engineers designed the boat in a way to maneuver obstacles and react to the various dangers of the seas.
