Merkel: Russia actions erodes mutual trust with West

  • Angry Brazilian protesters have rallied in Rio de Janeiro over the huge cost of the 2016 Olympic Games amid deep austerity cuts. As the protest threatened to get out of hand, officers fired rubber bullets and chased down demonstrators suspected of vandalism.
     
  • Another African American falls victim to a fatal US police shooting. The latest incident has happened in the state of Minnesota. The family of 32-year-old Philando Castile has confirmed that he died of the wounds he sustained in Wednesday night’s shooting. Police had pulled him over for a busted tail light.
     
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel has accused Russia of eroding mutual trust with the West over the situation in Ukraine. Merkel said Moscow's actions have disturbed NATO's members in eastern Europe. She made the comments on the eve of a major NATO summit in Poland.
     
  • Syria has once again criticized Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey for their support of terror groups in the country. Damascus has told the UN the three states and their western allies including the US fan the flames of violence in Syria. Syria asked the UN to take action against those countries.
     
  • China has warned the United States over meddling in its territorial disputes. In a phone conversation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged US Secretary of State John Kerry to keep Washington’s promise not to take sides in disputes in the South China Sea.
     
  • Muslims in south Asia have begun celebrating Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and several other countries gathered in mosques for Eid prayers. Celebrations last for several days and are a time for family gatherings and exchanging gifts.
     
  • A group of assailants has attacked a Muslim Eid prayer congregation in Bangladesh, leaving two people dead and several others injured. The incident occurred in Kishoreganj district about 140 kilometers northwest of the capital Dhaka. The attackers hurled bombs at the crowd and engaged in a gun battle with police.
     
  • Argentina’s former president Cristina Fernandez has accused the current government of using a central bank case to plot against her. Fernandez was speaking with reporters after she appeared in a Buenos Aires Court on Wednesday. The court ordered her assets to be frozen.
