Iranian women clinch bronze in Asian Kabaddi tournament

Iran’s national Kabaddi team claimed the bronze medal Sunday at the fourth edition of the Asian Women’s Kabaddi Championship in South Korea.

The Iranian sportswomen did their utmost throughout the match against Thailand, which was played in Busan, and maintained dominance on the court until the closing moments.

Thailand came from behind and stole a narrow 31-29 win.

Iran defeated Turkmenistan 78-7 in its opening match of the preliminary round on Friday.

It routed Taiwan 48-17 in the second encounter on Saturday, and downed South Korea 10-8 later in the march to the final fixture.

The fourth edition of the Asian Women’s Kabaddi Championship started in Busan on June 29 and will run through July 6.

The tournament has brought teams from the seven countries of Iran, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkmenistan.

Kabaddi is the national game of Bangladesh and also the state game of the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Punjab.

India has the most successful Kabaddi team on the world stage, having won every World Cup and Asian Games title so far, in both men’s and women’s categories.
