The 2013 revelations by former CIA contractor, Edward Snowden about massive US spying on its own citizens, foreign countries and even leaders of allied countries shook the world to the core. It was revealed that the US government, with the help of major telecommunications carriers has engaged in massive, often illegal surveillance since at least 2001. The leaks forced American lawmakers to make some amendments to the spying program, but it is widely believed the National Security Agency’s Spying Program is still very much in place.
