Argentina's president has urged Lionel Messi not to retire from international duty.

A spokesman for Mauricio Macri says the president called Messi and asked him to stick with the national team despite the criticism he’s facing.

The 29-year-old told reporters in the US that he decided to quit without winning a major trophy with his country.

Argentina were defeated by Chile on penalties in the Copa America final on Sunday, losing the title to La Roja for the second time in 2 years.
