Londoners gather outside UK parliament to express support for Corbyn

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • A demonstration is held outside the British parliament in London in support of Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn. The demonstrators have called on Corbyn not to succumb to pressure from party colleagues in the wake of the Brexit vote. Corbyn says he has no plans to resign.
  • Rating agencies, Fitch and Standard and Poor’s, have downgraded Britain’s credit rating, citing jitters created in the wake of the Brexit. The S-and-P has warned it could further slash the UK’s rating in the near future over the current economic prospects.
  • The Venezuelan government is adopting fresh measures to block the opposition's efforts to oust President Nicolas Maduro through a referendum. Jorge Rodriguez, who is appointed by Maduro to oversee the opposition's referendum drive says, legal challenges would be filed in towns and states.
  • Saudi warplanes continue bombing raids in Yemen, causing human and material losses. The latest strikes have hit the cities of Ta’izz and al-Qabbaytah. The bombing campaign comes as millions of Yemenis are observing the fasting month of Ramadan. Saudi Arabia’s deadly war on Yemen began in March last year.
  • Bahrainis continue their protests against the revocation of the citizenship of top Shia cleric Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim. Protesters chanted slogans in support of the cleric. A sit-in was also held outside the house of Sheikh Qassim for the eighth consecutive day.
  • Turkey’s President Rajab Tayib Erdogan has expressed hope for the renewal of diplomatic ties with Moscow. Erdogan made the comments hours after he formally apologized for Turkey’s downing of a Russian warplane last year. Erdogan said that settling differences will help serve the interests of both countries.
  • Russia’s foreign minister has once again said that the Syria crisis must be resolved by Syrians themselves. Sergei Lavrov was speaking during a meeting with members of the Western-backed Syrian opposition in Moscow. Lavrov underlined the need for Syrians to decide their own fate without foreign interference.
  • A huge bomb blast has rocked the Iraqi city of Abu Ghraib, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens of others. A bomber detonated his explosive vest inside a mosque in the city located west of the capital Baghdad. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
