Two German lawmakers arrested in Istanbul gay parade
Turkish police have detained two German lawmakers and 19 other people after taking part in a gay rights rally in Istanbul.
Large numbers of police forces used teargas and rubber bullets to break up the Sunday rally which was held despite being officially canceled by the city’s governor last week.
Terry Reintke, a European Parliament member, and Volker Beck, a member of the German parliament, were later released.
The rally was called off over concerns over public order. Strict security measures have been in place in the city since a series of bombing attacks attributed to the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
A ceasefire between the PKK and the Turkish government collapsed in July 2015 and attacks on Turkish security forces have soared ever since.
