6.3-magnitude quake rattles Kyrgyzstan

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale strikes Kyrgyzstan.

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has hit the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) says.

The USGS said the quake struck at a depth of 18 kilometers (11 miles) in a remote region near the border with China at 5:17 p.m. local time (1117 GMT) on Sunday, south of the capital, Bishkek.

The USGS added that the epicenter of the quake was 122 kilometers (75 miles) south of Osh and 27 kilometers (16 miles) south of Sary-Tash, a small town on the south side of the Alay Mountains, just north of Tajikistan

Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, however, said the tremor had a magnitude of 6.7 at its center and registered a magnitude of 4 in the southern city of Osh, the nearest city to the quake-stricken area.

There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.

Earthquakes happen frequently in the mountainous regions of Central Asia.
