Presumptive US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has voiced her concern over “economic uncertainty” following the UK’s vote to leave the European Union (EU), stressing the need for strong leadership in the White House.

"We respect the choice the people of the United Kingdom have made, our first task has to be to make sure that the economic uncertainty created by these events does not hurt working families here in America,” Clinton said in statement published on Friday.

“This time of uncertainty only underscores the need for calm, steady, experienced leadership in the White House to protect Americans' pocketbooks and livelihoods, to support our friends and allies, to stand up to our adversaries, and to defend our interests,” she added.

“We also have to make clear America's steadfast commitment to the special relationship with Britain and the transatlantic alliance with Europe,” Clinton said.

The former secretary of state made the comment after a majority of Britons voted on Thursday to leave the 28-member bloc after 43 years of membership, with some 52 percent of British voters opting to leave the EU and roughly 48 percent of people to stay in the union.

In a separate statement later in the day, former Republican presidential hopeful Senator Ted Cruz also called the Britons' historic decision to leave the EU a clear signal about the need for change.

"The results of the Brexit referendum should serve as a wake-up call for internationalist bureaucrats from Brussels to Washington, D.C. that some free nations still wish to preserve their national sovereignty," the Texas Senator said.

"The British people have indicated that they will no longer outsource their future to the EU," Cruz added.

Cruz further noted that the US could learn lessons from Britain’s Leave vote by focusing on "issues of security, immigration and economic autonomy that drove this historic vote" and deepening bilateral relationship with the UK.
