Renzi setback 

The results of mayoral elections in Italy over the weekend are believed to have delivered a serious blow to Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his ruling Democratic Party. The elections, more than anything else, had one specific impact; the consolidation of non-traditional parties among them the anti-establishment Five Star Movement. At the center of the breakthrough that the Five Star Movement made was the surprise victory of the 37-year-old lawyer Virginia Raggi in capital, Rome. Observers say she perfectly capitalized on people’s anger over political corruption and deteriorating city services.  



Bahrain strips Sheikh Qassim citizenship

The Bahraini regime continues to intensify its crackdown on its citizens who have called for democratic reforms. It has now revoked the citizenship of a top Shia cleric Ayatollah Isa Qassim. The move has sparked massive protests across the whole Persian Gulf kingdom.The Bahraini Interior Ministry has accused Sheikh Qassim of using his position to serve foreign interests and promote sectarianism and violence. This comes days after the Bahraini government suspended the main opposition group al-Wefaq. Many believe that the regime is desperate to silence the opposition in the wake of the recent suspensions.



Power struggle in Saudi Arabia 

A power struggle is underway in Saudi Arabia with King Salman having been pushed out of power practically. One unmistakable sign of the power struggle is the king’s son Muhammad Bin Salman recent visit to the US which analysts say was meant to portray him as the sole successor to the throne in Saudi Arabia. This is while Muhammad bin Salman is the second crown prince and the first crown prince is his cousin Muhammad bin Nayef. Meanwhile, speculation is already running rife about bin Nayef’s health and there are claims that he is seriously ill. The claims emerged after the visit of bin Salman to the White House.
