Iraqi forces retake most of Fallujah from Daesh

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Iraqi officials say the city of Fallujah is almost cleared of Daesh terrorists. According to military officials, Iraqi troops are facing resistance from terrorists in only two neighborhoods in the north of the city. A number of terrorists have been killed and their facilities destroyed. 
  • The Bahraini regime has faced growing international criticism over revoking the citizenship of top Shia cleric Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim. Human Rights Watch said the move is aimed at silencing peaceful political dissent in Bahrain. Also, a top UN official has urged Manama to de-escalate the situation. 
  • Yemen’s Ansarullah movement and its allies say they will not sign any peace deal without a prior agreement on a consensus president. According a statement released by an Ansarullah spokesman, an agreement must be reached between warring parties on who should lead the transition in Yemen. 
  • The Syrian president has tasked the country’s Electricity Minister Emad Mohammad Deeb Khamis with forming a new government. Local media have not provided details on the immediate reason behind the move. Imad Khamis will be replacing outgoing premier, Wael Nader al-Halqi, who was appointed to the post in 2012.
  • An Iranian official says six members of a spy group have been arrested in the northwestern city of Tabriz. General prosecutor Hekmat-Ali Mozaffari added the group called Gamoo had been gathering classified military and economic documents and give them to the enemies of the country. 
  • President Vladimir Putin has slammed NATO for what he calls the alliance’s rhetoric and aggression close to Russia's border. Addressing lawmakers, Putin warned that Moscow is being forced to boost its military capacity. He was alluding to NATO’s war games and planned troop deployment in Eastern Europe. 
  • The Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia say they have finally reached a definitive cease-fire deal. The announcement heralds an end to a five-decade conflict that has claimed at least 220000 lives in the country. The peace talks have been underway since 2012. 
  • US presidential candidate Donald Trump has savaged his democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, calling her a world-class liar. Trump says Clinton is not qualified to run for president. He called on supporters of another Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders to vote for him in order to defeat Clinton.
