Acclaimed Italian composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi has played a solo piano performance on a floating platform in the Arctic. The performance was part of a greenpeace campaign to protect the polar region.

Einaudi played a composition written for the occasion, called “Elegy for the Arctic”, on a grand piano off the coast of Sval-bard in Norway.

The piano was shipped from Germany by greenpeace activists. The video shows ice collapsing into the sea as Einaudi plays his solemn elegy.

The performance was held ahead of a meeting in Spain this week during which delegates are due to consider a proposal to protect ten percent of the Arctic Ocean.
