Israel election as UN committee chair 'mockery' of charter: Iran

Iran has denounced Israel’s chairmanship of the UN Legal Committee as a mockery of the UN charter.

  • Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Gholam Hossein Dehqani, has denounced Israel’s chairmanship of the UN Legal Committee as a mockery of the UN charter. He described Israel as a violator of international law and its chairmanship as a clear evidence of double standards when it comes to human rights issues.
  • Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has clashed with two members of two terrorist groups in the country’s northwest. A number of the terrorists were killed during the fighting. The IRGC says the terror groups were trying to enter Iran via a border area to carry out sabotage and terrorist attacks.
  • Iraqi forces have managed to liberate more areas from Daesh terrorists near the city of Fallujah. The Iraqi army recaptured three villages, a bridge and part of the Heeta-wiyeen area, southeast of Fallujah. The Iraqi troops are pounding the positions of Daesh terrorists from the outskirts of the city.
  • The United Arab Emirates says the Yemeni war for Emirati troops is over but the Arab country will likely keep part of its forces in war-torn Yemen. They are currently stationed in the province of Hadramawt and city of Aden. The UAE has been a key participant in the Saudi-led aggression on Yemen.
  • A group of military police officers in Canada say nearly half of all Afghan detainees held by Canadian troops in Afghanistan between 20-10 and 2011 had no links to the Taliban. The officers demanded accountability for the wrongful detention and mistreatment of the detainees by Canadian soldiers.
  • A Brexit fishing flotilla that includes 30 boats has sailed up London’s River Thames ahead of next week’s referendum over Britain’s EU membership. The flotilla led by the UK Independence Party supports UK leaving EU membership. Britons are set to hold the referendum on June 23.
  • The United Nations Children’s Fund says child refugees are forced into sexual exploitation, violence and labor in shanty towns outside the French port of Calais. The UN added that the situation which has worsened over the past year is so bad that a lot of the children are at risk of madness.
  • Human Rights Watch says more than four-hundred people have been killed during the crackdown on anti-government protests in Ethiopia since November 2015. The rights organization also said that tens of thousands of people have been arrested by Ethiopian security forces during the period. The Ethiopian government has rejected the report.
