China blasts US over organ harvesting accusation
China has censured the US Congress for passing a resolution that supports the outlawed Falun Gong sect and alleges Beijing is engaged in illegal organ harvesting from prisoners.
On Tuesday, Zhu Haiquan, the spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the US, denounced the US House of Representatives for the “groundless accusations” it made against China in the Monday resolution, and called on the US Congress to renounce its support for Falun Gong.
The resolution calls for the implementation of an existing law by the State Department to deny visas to citizens of China and other countries allegedly engaged in illicit organ harvesting. It also expresses Washington’s support for Falun Gong, which china describes as an “anti-society cult” and “a political group that is extremely anti-China and attempts to undermine China-US relations.”
In 2015, china announced it had stopped harvesting organs from executed prisoners. In December 2014, Huang Jiefu, the head of the country's organ donation committee, said that by January 1, 2015, only organs donated voluntarily by civilians can be used.
A China Daily report said last month that the country had the biggest number of public organ donations, which had risen 120 times since 2010, among Asian countries.
