2 Emirati pilots killed in military helicopter crash in Yemen

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court to block the opposition’s efforts to hold a recall referendum. Maduro’s office has asked the Court to protect QUOTE Venezuelans’ constitutional rights, accusing the opposition of fraud in gathering signatures for a recall vote against the president.
  • Two Emirati pilots are killed in a military helicopter crash in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden. The UAE has confirmed the incident, but failed to specify its cause. Just two days ago, another Emirati helicopter crashed into the sea in Yemen, killing two crew members.
  • More than seven-thousand Iraqi civilians have managed to flee the Daesh-held city of Fallujah through a safe corridor established by the army. Lise Grande, the United Nations Deputy Representative to Iraq says Iraqi forces are trying to open a second protected route to help more civilians leave the city.
  • Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says those governments which support a military solution to the Syria crisis are hampering international efforts to peacefully end the conflict. Amir-Abdollahian also noted that terrorists and foreign-backed militants in Syria have no commitment to ceasefire and peace talks.
  • Amnesty International has condemned the deteriorating human rights situation in Bahrain, after security forces arrested human rights activist Nabeel Rajab. The Bahraini activist was detained on Monday in his house in the village of Bani Jamrah. Rajab already served two years in prison over his anti-government comments in 20-12.
  • French police have gunned down an assailant after he killed a police commander and his wife in a Paris suburb. The police also rescued a three-year-old boy who was held hostage along with his mother in the house. Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the killings.
  • France has jailed several England fans over their role in Saturday’s fight with Russian fans ahead of the England-Russia Euro 2016 football match in Marseille. A French prosecutor says 150 Russians evaded arrest over the mass brawls that left a number of people injured.
  • Stock markets around the world have fallen amid concerns that Britons may vote to exit the European Union. An opinion poll conducted by YouGov shows a seven-point lead for the "Leave" camp. The British government has warned that exiting the E-U could adversely impact European and British economies.
