Germany have kicked off their campaign with a 2-nil win over Ukraine in Group C, at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in the French city of Lille.

The world champs opened the scoring 20 minutes into the first half when Toni Kroos swung a superb free-kick into the box before being met by a powerful header from Shkodran Mustafi to take it into the net in his eleventh cap.

The match was full of ups and down with both teams missing several opportunities, thanks to outstanding performances from both keepers, which left the first half result unchanged.

Just when Ukraine were taking their last chances to level the match, Germany broke precisely and decisively down the left with Mesut Ozil picking up the ball and delivering over a wonderful cross to the back post for Bastian Schweinsteiger to reach the ball and find the net with a shot into the roof the net.
