170-million minors remain trapped in child labor worldwide: ILO

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The International Labor Organization says nearly 170-million minors remain trapped in child labor worldwide. According to the U-N agency, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of child labor. It, however, says that current international standards have reduced the numbers by one-third in the last decade.
  • Turkish President Receb Tayyip Erdogan slams the U-S for supporting the Kurdish militants fighting against Daesh in Syria. Erdogan described the US-backed Kurdish Protection Units as terrorists. Ankara has time and again warned of military intervention in Syria if the Y-P-G militants push west of the Euphrates River.

  • France's national airline has asked passengers to check their flight status before travelling, as its pilots continue their 4-day strike. About a quarter of Air France pilots are on strike. They want the government to scrap the proposed labor reforms. The walkout comes as France is hosting the Euro 2016 football tournament.
  • The Iranian foreign minister says reaching a nuclear deal with the P5+1 does not mean that the West will stop its enmity toward Iran. Addressing the Iranian lawmakers, Mohammad Javad Zarif also noted that Tehran will continue its fight against arrogant powers and will never trust Washington.
  • Iraqi troops have gained ground against Daesh near the northern city of Mosul. They've advanced towards the village of Haj Ali, about 60 kilometers south of Mosul. The city fell into Daesh hands in 2014. Meanwhile, army troops have driven the terrorists out of areas near the city of Fallujah.
  • An explosion has left 4 people injured at the main international airport in China’s southeastern city of Shanghai. Chinese media report that the blast at the check-in-area of Pudong’s airport was caused by homemade explosives. The incident has caused a major security alert.
