Qatar summons US ambassador over flag video

A screen grab from a video showing American soldiers showing disrespect for the Qatari national flag.

Qatar summons the US ambassador to Doha over a video posted online showing American soldiers disrespecting the Qatari flag.

The ambassador "was asked for an explanation of the contents of that video," the Qatari Foreign Ministry said of the Thursday summoning.

The video shows a male and female soldier in fatigues joking and laughing in front of US and Qatari flags. The pair are seen saying they are being filmed at an "unknown dislocation" called "ummm," referring to Qatar.

All online versions of the video were rendered inaudible after it went viral.

US Ambassador Dana Shell Smith (seen below) reacted to the video on Twitter, saying, "The US military command was sent to investigate this incident and disciplinary action will be taken."

"Rest assured that these soldiers made fun of themselves and not of the state of Qatar," she said in another tweet, written in Arabic.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook also said, "We sincerely regret any offence the video may have caused."

"The content of this video does not reflect the esteem the United States has for the state of Qatar," he added.

The emirate hosts the US airbase Al Udeid, the largest in the Middle East, where around 10,000 military personnel are stationed.
