US threatens to take action amid China's constructions in South China Sea islets

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The United States threatens to take action against China, if it goes ahead with the construction of a building on one of the South China Sea islets. US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has warned that the construction would fuel tensions and isolate China.
  • Iraqi forces evacuate civilians from around the Daesh-held city of Fallujah as they continue their push to liberate the city. Iraqi commanders say the military advance is being slowed down by the large number of civilians held hostage by the Takfiri terrorists inside the city.
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Washington has asked Moscow not to attack Nusra Front militants in Syria. Lavrov said the U-S fears that attacking the al-Qaeda-linked group might endanger what it calls moderate rebels. The Russian official noted that fighting Nusra and Daesh should be a top priority in Syria.
  • Boxing legend, Muhammad Ali, has died at the age of 74 in the US state of Arizona. The former heavyweight world champion was being treated for respiratory trouble at a hospital in the city of Phoenix. His respiratory trouble had been complicated by Parkinson’s disease diagnosed in the 19-80s.
  • A new jobs report in the United States has caused Wall Street stocks and the dollar to fall, raising worries about a weak international growth. According to the Labor Department, employers added only 38-thousand jobs in May. That's the weakest performance in nearly 6 years.
  • In the US, hundreds of video clips and investigative materials are released which show Chicago police officers firing their weapons or otherwise using force against civilians. The video clips published by the Independent Police Review Authority, include shots from police body cameras, dash cams, surveillance videos, and cell phones.
  • The River Seine in Paris has reached its highest level in more than 30 years. The torrential rains caused heavy traffic, closed the roads as well as several railway stations in the city. The Louvre and Orsay museums remain closed. Staff have moved artworks to safety as flood levels climbed above six meters.
  • Iran’s volleyball team secure a long-sought berth in the 20-16 Summer Olympics after a 3-to-1 victory over world champions Poland in the qualifiers in Japan. The result ensures a top-three finish for the Iranian side, and puts them atop all other Asian teams in the qualifiers’ standings.
