One pilot has been killed as a couple of US warplanes have crashed during separate incidents in the country.

The pilot of a Blue Angles fighter jet lost his life during practice for a weekend show in the city of Tennessee.

The F/A-18 jet crashed not long after takeoff in Smyrna, about 24 miles (39 km) southeast of Nashville, Town Manager Harry Gill told reporters.

"It's been confirmed that it was in fact a Blue Angel that went down and there was one fatality. Our police and fire departments responded appropriately. There were no other injuries, no civilian injuries. We currently have the crash scene sealed off pending an investigation by the United States military," said the official.

The crash occurred about 2 miles (3 km) from an airport runway while the Blue Angels were practicing for a weekend air show, the Navy said, adding that the cause of the crash was being investigated. The pilot's name was not made public.

However, a US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was quoted by some US media as saying that the pilot was Marine Capt. Jeff Kuss.

Earlier in Colorado, another Thunderbirds squadron pilot ejected safely when his F-16 jet crashed during a flyover in a graduation ceremony attended by President Barack Obama.

The plane went down in a field 5 miles (8 km) south of Peterson Air Force Base, the Air Force said.

The unnamed pilot was later visited by Obama as the president expressed his relief he had not been seriously injured.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known and the Air Force said it would undertake an investigation. The Air Force's Air Combat Command said on Twitter that no one was hurt on the ground and there was no hazard to the public.
