So-called Syria opposition negotiator resigns

The chief negotiator of the so-called Syrian opposition, known as the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), has resigned over what he has described as the failure of the UN-backed Geneva peace talks.

Mohammad Alloush, who is also the representative of the Takfiri Jaish al Islam militant group in the Saudi-based HNC, said in a statement that the peace talks had also failed to secure the release of thousands of detainees or to force Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to quit power. The HNC suspended in April its formal participation in the Syria peace talks, saying they would only return if the situation radically changed on the ground.
