Tehran has hosted a new film festival with an entirely different look at the events associated with the battle against Takfiri terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria.

Dubbed “Defenders of the Holy Shrine,” the film festival has awarded some of the best documentary films and video clips which captured some of the most dramatic moments of the fight against terrorists.

Afghan, Iraqi and Iranian fighters, who voluntarily gave up their lives to fight Takfiri terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq and protect holy sites, are known in Iran as the defenders of holy shrines.

Documentaries chronicle what the defenders go through in fighting Daesh terrorists who aim to demolish sacred places.

“Our main objective was to raise awareness about the defenders because they are quite unknown to many of our people,” said Hamid Yadrouj, the secretary of the festival.

“By watching films about these men, we will come to a new understanding of the people who have dedicated their lives to defending Islam,” he said.

The film festival was jointly held by the Fars news agency, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and Katibeh Cultural Institute.

The festival aims to encourage new filmmakers into taking further steps toward capturing what is not usually displayed in Western and Arabic mainstream media.

A selection of documentaries on the stories of the resistance against terrorists is scheduled to be aired on Iran’s national television and satellite channels in the near future.

Iran has made it clear that it would step in if the Daesh Takfiris advanced to within 40 kilometers of the country’s borders or moved to desecrate holy Shia shrines in Syria and Iraq.

The conflict in Syria, which flared in March 2011, has claimed more than 400,000 lives thus far and left over one million injured, according to the United Nations.

Daesh terrorists, many of whom were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize Syria, now control parts of Iraq and neighboring Syria. They have been committing heinous crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.
