The east African nation was heralded as a future success story with US President Barack Obama choosing to use the birthplace of his father to launch the latest African charm offensive.

But with just a year before the country goes to the polls for the presidential elections, international condemnation of Kenya's policing is growing. Will the latest spate of state-sponsored heavy-handiness derail Kenya’s limited progress? The police have already arrested several protesters and with continued fears about further action, as Kenyans call for the scrapping of the electoral oversight body, is this leading to a dangerous end-game?
