Rescuers in Sri Lanka have pulled an elephant calf to safety after it got trapped in a drain in the southern port city of Hambantota.

The calf appeared to have fallen into the drain which was located on the main road to the port.

The region is known for the hundreds of wild elephants that roam freely. Local port workers joined wildlife officials to break open more of the drain, and reach inside to rescue the animal.
