Vincenzo Nibali took stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia on Friday, as Esteban Chaves took the overall lead with just two stages left.

162 kilometers of mostly uphill mountain riding, before a downhill finish, welcomed the Riders to the 19th Stage of Giro d’Italia.

Overall leader Steven Kruijswijk smashed into the snow and took a heavy fall when he was neck-and-neck with pink jersey rivals Esteban Chaves of Orica-GreenEdge and Astana's Vincenzo Nibali.

Chaves and Nibali accelerated away on the descent, attempting to catch stage leaders Michele Scarponi and Maxime Monfort.

With Nibali, Mikel Nieve and Chaves and Scarponi together they powered off in pursuit of Monfort, and overtook him 10 kilometers from the finish.

The home favorite Nibali pulled away to win the stage, with team Sky's Nieve 2nd and Chaves claiming 3rd.

Chaves now holds the advantage, but the race will be decided on Saturday's mountainous 134 km stage.
