Press TV has interviewed Robert Oulds, the director of the Bruges Group, and Shabbir Razvi, an economic commentator, to discuss the pros and cons of the UK’s potential exit from the European Union (EU), known colloquially as Brexit.

Oulds says Britain does not belong to the EU and British people do not want to be a part of the bloc. He says the country only wants to engage in trade with the EU and remain independent in terms of self-governance.

“The European Union has caused untold economic harm, millions without jobs, mass poverty, austerity measures without end,” Oulds says.

He says the beneficiaries of the EU system are “of course transnational companies and multinational corporations.”

Razvi, for his part, believes, “It is in the interest of Britain to stay in the European Union at many levels.”

Labor laws in Britain have not been supportive of the working people, but EU regulations have made those laws more liberal, he says.

He further says the UK has an aging population of 10.3 million pensioners; thus, “Some economists have calculated that Britain needs about five million immigrants to sort of contribute to the economy through work, through taxation so that the pensions can be paid to the aging population.”
