Sea snail chemicals prove potent cancer killer: Study

A new research suggests that chemicals from the sea snail found along Australia's east coast are proving incredibly powerful in fighting cancer.

Australian scientists say a chemical in the eggs of White Rock sea snails are not only tackling normal cancer cells, but also appear to be capable of killing some chemo-resistant cancers.

Researchers believe the class of molecules will also be effective in fighting breast, prostate and colorectal cancers.

Scientist say many years of work is needed before the drug can be produced to the right strength in a way that is not toxic for humans.

The drug is in a pre-clinical phase which means it is still uncertain whether the cancer killing molecules these snails possess will ever be used for anything more than research. The scientists say any trials are five to ten years away.
